U grčkoj mitologiji Alkiona (starogrčki: Ἀλκυόνη ) bila je jedna od sedam Plejada, kćeri Atlasa i Plejone ili rjeđe Etre.^[1] Privukla je pažnju Posejdona i rodila mu nekoliko djece, koja su u izvorima dobila različita imena: Hirijej, Hiperenor i Etuza;^[2] Hiperes i Antas;^[3] i Epopej.^[4]^[5] Sa smrtnikom Antedonom, Alkiona je postala majka ribara Glauka, koji je kasnije transformisan u morskog boga.^[6]

Etimologija

Alkiona dolazi od grčke riječi alkyón (ἀλκυών), što se odnosi na morsku pticu sa žalosnom pjesmom^[7] ili posebno na pticu vodomara.^[8] Značenja riječi su neizvjesno jer se smatra da je alkyón predgrčkog, neindoevropskog porijekla.^[9] Međutim, narodna etimologija ih je povezala sa háls (starogrčki: ἅλς , "slana voda, more, sol") i kyéo (starogrčki: κυέω , "zamišljam"). Alkyóne se prvobitno piše sa glatkim znakom disanja, ali ovo lažno porijeklo koje počinje sa grubim znakom disanja (transliteriranim kao slovo H) dovelo je do uobičajenih pogrešnih pisanja halkyón (starogrčki: ἁλκυών ) i Halkyóne (starogrčki: Ἁλκυόνη ),^[10] i stoga je naziv jedne od ptica vodomara na engleskom Halcyon.
