U Španiji postoji 8.119 općina (grad), podijeljenih u pedeset provincija, uključujući i dva autonomna grada: Ceutu i Melillu. Provincija Burgos se sastoji od najviše gradova u Španiji, njih 371, dok provincija Las Palmas broji najmanje, tek 34.[1]

Španija ima 46.745.807 stanovnika, raspoređenih u 8.117 općina. Postoje samo dvije općine koje prelaze milijun stanovnika: Madrid i Barcelona, 22 grada ima više od 200.000 stanovnika, 33 općine između 100.000 i 200.000 stanovnika, a 83 općine između 50.000 i 100.000 stanovnika.
