El anfiteatro, patrimonio de la Humanidad de la Unesco desde 1979, fue construido aprox. en 238 d.C, cuando la Túnez moderna pertenecía al la provincia de África del Imperio Romano. Es, con una capacidad de 35,000 espectadores, una longitud de 148 m y un anchura de 122 m, el tercer mayor anfiteatro del antiguo Imperio, el mejor conservado y el único en África.
