Katalog maglina i zvjezdanih jata
Katalog maglina i zvijezdanih jata (CN) jest astronomski katalog maglina koji je prvi put objavio 1786. William Herschel, uz pomoć svoje sestre Caroline Herschel. Kasnije ga je njegov sin, John Frederick William Herschel, 1864. proširio u Opći katalog maglina i zvijezdanih jata (GC). CN i GC su prethodnici Novog općeg kataloga (NGC) Johna Louisa Emila Dreyera, sastavljenog 1888. a koji koriste sadašnji astronomi.

Katalog maglina i zvjezdanih jata je prvi put objavio William Herschel 1786. u Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London.[1] Godine 1789. dodao je još 1.000 unosa,[2] i na kraju još 500 1802,[3] čime je katalog imao ukupno 2.500 unosa. Ovaj katalog je nastao upotrebom slova i kataloških brojeva kao identifikatora. Veliko "H" iza koje slijedi kataloški upisni broj predstavlja stavku.[4]
Godine 1864. John Frederick William Herschel (Vilijamov sin) je proširio CN u Opći katalog maglina i jata zvijezda (GC).[5] GC je sadržavao 5.079 unosa. Komplementarno izdanje kataloga kao Opći katalog 10.300 višestrukih i dvostrukih zvjezda je posthumno objavljeno. Malo "h" praćeno brojem kataloške stavke predstavljao je stavku.[4]
Godine 1878. John Louis Emil Dreyer je objavio dodatak Općem katalogu.[6] Godine 1886. predložio je izradu drugog dodatka Općem katalogu, ali je Kraljevsko astronomsko društvo zatražilo od Dreyera da umjesto toga sastavi novu verziju. To je dovelo do objavljivanja Novog općeg kataloga (NGC) 1888.[7] i njegova dva proširenja, Indeksnih kataloga (IC), 1895.[8] i 1908.[9]
