Skenirajući Tunelski Mikroskop (STM) je veoma moćna tehnologija za snimanje površine i karakterizaciju materijala sa mogućnošću postizanja atomske rezolucije. STM je zasnovana na kvantno-mehaničkom efektu tunelovanja elektrona. Kada se zašiljen vrh od provodnog materijala približi provodnom ili poluprovodničkom materijalu napon koji je prethodno ostvaren između vrha i materijala omogućava prolazak elektrona kroz vakuum koji ih razdvaja. Nakon uspostavljanja toka elektrona struja koja teče između uzorka i vrha (koji igra ulogu sonde) je funkcija lokalne gustine stanja.
Njegov razvoj je 1981. donio pronalazačima, Gerd-u Binnig-u i Heinrich-u Rohrer-u (sa IBM Zürich), Nobelovu nagradu za fiziku, 1986.
